Networking

When you think of the word ‘Networking’, what first comes to mind? Meeting new people right? At least I think that is the first thing that comes to mind. Meeting new people and making new contacts. But the question is, is that really networking?

According to Urban dictionary, networking is defined as a fabric or structure of fibrous elements attached to each other at regular intervals. The words that struck here are ‘regular intervals’. That is to say that this so called structure is connected regularly. Is this really the case when we think of networking for individuals? We always hope that this is the case when we go to a so called networking event to meet new people, but most times at the end of the day, we collect a pile of business cards from people we meet and later can’t match the face and the name together, and at the end of the day, these cards collected end up in the bin!

Among the problems of many networking events across the globe is that when entrepreneurs or professionals meet, sometimes they are unsure of how to start a conversation or the appropriate questions to ask. Also, there could be fear of rejection coming from either party. Individuals question how comfortable the other party is to reveal or answer certain questions. Soon the awkward moments begin to creep in.

The regular way of meeting and networking in events these days has become a cliché as everybody will already expect boring and long speeches and restrictions when it comes to interaction with other professionals. Environment is supposed to be chilled and relaxed but then, professionals are too busy to impress anyone, so instead they hurry up conversations which leads to exchange of business cards that end up in the trash. Sad, but this happens!

Now, there are certain ways under certain atmospheres where meeting and networking can happen naturally without immense pressure. Where businesses can experience growth opportunities, meet face to face with consumers, complimentary businesses and similar businesses, learn from each other, show case varieties, explore, connect, have fun and create more awareness about their brands. This way, the memory shared will be too good to throw away or dump the card, because each contact would have struck a memorable impression.
